Grant Turner Memorial Scholarship
The Annapolis Open - Officer Grant Turner Memorial Baseball Tournament uses part of the proceeds to fund a scholarship in Grant Turner's name at South River High, Annapolis Sr. High, and Arundel High Schools.
Grant graduated from South River High School where he played in a number of sports. Grant was not the star player but he was the one with the most heart who tried as hard as he could. Grant suffered from athletic asthma and so his playing time was restricted. His condition did not stop him from going out for sports such as lacrosse where he would be ready to play anytime at a moments notice. This scholarship honors him by choosing the high school player, or sporting participant (such as a team manager), who exhibits the same perseverance and tenacity as Grant.
The scholarship is administered by the Athletic Departments of the two high schools. For further information contact Mrs. Hirsch at South River High School and Mrs. Whitlock at Annapolis Sr. High School.
In 2008, the tournament raised $6,500 for the scholarship fund while others made numerous other gifts. Our goals for the future are much higher, because Grant's goals were high, and so we try and strive to be like him in all we do.
